History and Development

The Romanian PSL was developed in the mid-1970s and formally adopted in 1974 to provide Romanian forces with a semi-automatic designated marksman capability chambered in 7.62x54R. Built at the Cugir factory in Romania, the rifle was intended to extend effective engagement distances beyond standard infantry rifles while maintaining familiar AK-pattern controls. Over decades of service, the platform has remained in production and has been exported for both military and civilian markets. The psl sniper rifle designation reflects its marksman role rather than a modern precision competition rifle classification.
