Deep Dive

Overview

The HEVI-Shot HEVI-18 TSS Turkey 20 Gauge #9 load is designed for turkey hunters who prioritize maximum pattern density and precision. With 543 ultra-dense tungsten pellets per shell, this load excels at delivering devastating coverage in the turkey’s vital zone, even at extended distances. The 3 inch, 1 1/2 ounce payload is optimized for modern 20 gauge shotguns, offering a balance of manageable recoil and long-range lethality. This makes it ideal for hunters facing pressured birds, open terrain, or situations where tight patterns and consistent penetration matter most. From close-range setups to longer shots, this load is built to deliver clean, ethical results.

History and Development

HEVI-Shot has been at the forefront of high-density shotshell innovation since its founding in 2000, earning a reputation for pushing beyond the limits of traditional lead performance. The HEVI-18 TSS line represents one of the company’s most advanced offerings, utilizing Tungsten Super Shot with a density of 18 g/cc. This extreme density allows for smaller shot sizes, like #9, to achieve penetration comparable to much larger lead pellets. The development of this specific load was driven by hunters seeking the tightest possible patterns and extended effective range from a 20 gauge platform, without sacrificing reliability or consistency.

Common Questions and FAQs

• Why choose #9 TSS over larger shot sizes for turkey hunting?
The ultra-high density of #9 TSS allows for far more pellets per shell while maintaining deep penetration, resulting in tighter patterns and a higher probability of vital hits.
• Is this load effective at longer distances?
Yes. Despite the small pellet size, 18 g/cc tungsten retains lethal energy well past traditional lead ranges, making this load effective beyond 50 yards with proper choke selection.
• Can I shoot this ammo through any 20-gauge shotgun?
This ammunition is designed for 20-gauge shotguns chambered for 3-inch shells. Always confirm your firearm and choke are rated for tungsten-based loads.
• Is HEVI-18 TSS safe for use in lead-restricted areas?
Yes. Tungsten Super Shot is non-toxic and approved for use where lead ammunition is restricted.
• What choke works best with #9 TSS loads?
Most hunters prefer a tight turkey choke designed for TSS or tungsten loads, but pattern testing your specific shotgun is always recommended.
• Does Target Sports USA offer bulk pricing or free shipping?
Yes. Bulk purchases of HEVI-Shot HEVI-18 TSS qualify for free shipping at Target Sports USA, making it easier to stock up before the season.
