Veteran Ammo Brassback 9mm Ammo 115 Grain Full Metal Jacket Brass Plated Steel - HMBX-9-115-BPSTEEL

Veteran Ammo HMBX 9mm Luger 115 Grain Full Metal Jacket is a cost-effective training round designed for high-volume range use without sacrificing reliability. Built around a lightweight 115 grain FMJ projectile, this load delivers manageable recoil, smooth feeding, and consistent performance in standard semi-automatic handguns. The Brassback configuration uses a brass-plated steel case to help control cost while maintaining dependable extraction during extended practice sessions. Boxer-primed and non-corrosive, it is well suited for drills, target shooting, and casual plinking. Available in 50-round boxes or bulk 1,000-round cases, it offers excellent value for shooters focused on round count and range time.

Features and Specifications:

  • 115 Grain FMJ: Lightweight full metal jacket projectile designed for smooth feeding and consistent performance during range sessions, drills, and general practice with standard 9mm Luger pistols.
  • Manageable Recoil: The lighter 115 grain bullet weight helps keep recoil mild, supporting faster follow-up shots and better control during extended training or high-round-count range days.
  • Brass-Plated Steel Case: Uses a thin brass coating over a steel case to balance reliable extraction with lower production cost compared to traditional solid brass ammunition.
  • Range-Focused Load: Optimized specifically for target shooting and training, prioritizing reliability and consistency rather than terminal performance for defensive use.
  • Non-Corrosive Primer: Boxer-primed and non-corrosive construction helps keep firearms cleaner and reduces maintenance concerns after long practice sessions.
  • Packaging Options: Offered in 50-round boxes for casual range trips and 1,000-round cases for high-volume shooters looking to maximize value and minimize cost per round.

Deep Dive

Overview

Veteran Ammo HMBX 9mm Luger 115 grain FMJ is designed as a dedicated range and training cartridge for shooters who prioritize volume, consistency, and controllability. This load performs best in standard semi-automatic handguns chambered in 9mm Luger, making it a solid option for striker-fired pistols, duty-style handguns, and compact range guns alike. The lighter 115 grain bullet weight helps keep recoil manageable, allowing shooters to focus on fundamentals such as sight tracking, trigger control, and reload drills. Its full metal jacket projectile promotes reliable feeding across a wide range of magazines and feed ramps, making it well suited for structured practice, casual plinking, and high-round-count training days where dependability matters more than terminal performance.

History and Development

Veteran Ammo operates under Hyperion Munitions, a veteran-owned manufacturer focused on producing affordable, reliable ammunition for everyday shooters. The HMBX line is positioned to meet the needs of range-focused customers who want consistent ignition and dependable cycling without paying a premium for defensive or match-grade ammunition. The Brassback 9mm 115 grain FMJ cartridge was developed to reduce cost per round while maintaining functional reliability. By pairing a conventional lead-core FMJ projectile with a brass-plated steel case, Veteran Ammo delivers a training load that balances smooth feeding and extraction with lower material costs. This design supports high-volume shooting while remaining non-corrosive and Boxer-primed, aligning with the expectations of modern handgun shooters looking for practical, disposable range ammunition.

Common Questions and FAQs

  • Is this 9mm ammo suitable for self-defense?
No. This 115 grain FMJ load is designed for target shooting and training. Full metal jacket bullets are best suited for practice, not defensive use.
  • Will brass-plated steel cases work in most 9mm pistols?
Yes. Brass-plated steel cases are designed to feed and extract reliably in most modern semi-automatic pistols, though performance can vary by firearm.
  • Is this ammunition reloadable?
It is Boxer-primed and non-corrosive, but brass-plated steel cases are generally not considered reloadable and are typically treated as disposable range brass.
  • Can this ammo be used at indoor ranges?
Many indoor ranges allow brass-plated steel, but the cases will attract a magnet. Always check your range’s steel-case or magnet policy before use.
  • Is this a standard-pressure 9mm load?
Yes. Veteran Ammo markets this round as a standard-pressure training load intended for routine range use and extended practice sessions.
  • Does Target Sports USA offer bulk pricing on this ammo?
Yes. This ammunition is available in 50-round boxes and 1,000-round cases, with bulk options offering improved value for high-volume shooters.

Reviews

I picked 1 star

"I picked 1 star because i couldnt select anything lower. The casing expanded and didnt shrink fast enough and got stuck in my chamber (OA defense 2311). Long story short. It broke my extractor. Never had a malfuntion after 3000 prior rounds of all sorts of other ammo this gun eats. I gave this amo away for free with a stern warning. It is trash. I will never buy it again"

Veteran Ammo, a veteran

"Veteran Ammo, a veteran of what - crappy ammo? This has been the absolute worse 9mm ammo that I've ever fired. I used 3 different 9mm's (rifle & pistol). Did not load or eject correctly in pistols, and it blew the back off the steel case in my rifle leaving the rest of the steel case imbedded in my chamber. I took it to a Gunsmith and he could not remove it so I'll have to send it in for factory service. I've never left a one star review before, but this is one star too many. Extremely dismayed with Veteran Ammo."

If you need practice

"If you need practice on clearing brass stuck in the barrel and rounds that don't shoot, this is the best ammo. Great for any kind of malfunction drill. Otherwise, not worth the discount. I've shot steel and brass-plated steel before, and I will again, just not from veteran ammo."

— Esad M. (1/5)

I have had a

"I have had a customer buy 500 rounds and they keep jamming. I went with the customer to the range so he could show me and every round after firing wont come out of the barrel. I has to be pushed out with a brass rod. I had to give that customer a refund, because of the bad ammo."

For some reason, this

"For some reason, this ammo does not work well with my full-size Walther PDP. However, it does work great with my M&P Shield"

— Christopher C. (3/5)

Taurus G3 didn’t like

"Taurus G3 didn’t like it. Had many failures and that gun has eaten everything so far. Slide wouldn’t close all the way on 12-15 out of a box of 50. Was accurate though. Would definitely be a better round if it were brass cased."

— Paul B. (1/5)

Horrible ammo. Will

"Horrible ammo. Will not extract. Tried on multiple weapons, HK VP9, Sig P226, 365, 320 & Springfield 1911 Target in 9mm all with the same results. Purchased 1000 rounds of this garbage and can't use it. Very disappointed."

— Darin H. (1/5)

This is some of

"This is some of the worst ammo I’ve ever seen. Swollen cartridge cases failing to extract and requiring a ramrod to remove were constant, sometimes one after the other. None of the headstamps match. Several of the bullets were pushed too far into the casing, and there were multiple failures to fire. This occurred with at least 3 different handguns. This ammo is not worth the money. Go with a better brand."

— Alan B. (1/5)

I just wanted

"I just wanted to try it"

— Tribe D. (5/5)

I had multiple failures

"I had multiple failures with this ammunition. I tried it in several firearms, and they all reacted the same way. Seems like the headspacing is incorrect or the brass quality is poor, because the round would fire and the shell casing would get stuck in the barrel's breech. The extractor claw wouldn't be able to pull on it hard enough to remove the casing to eject it. Had to use a Leatherman tool and/or a wooden dowel and a hammer to punch it out of the barrel in order to remove the casing. This occurred in 5 different pistols that I own. I would not recommend this ammunition to anybody, and I have many boxes of it that are sitting in my ammunition storage locker, which I will likely never use. I'd avoid this ammunition."
